What is Osteoarthritis of the knee?

osteoarthritis-knee image
Normally, smooth cartilage covers and protects the ends of your bones where they meet in the knee joint. In addition, a thick and slippery fluid in the joint provides lubrication and extra cushioning.

When you have osteoarthritis of the knee:

  • The smooth cartilage wears away and becomes less protective
  • The joint fluid loses its lubrication abilities
  • The resulting pain and stiffness can make walking or any daily activity difficult.

What is HYALGAN®?

HYALGAN® is used to relieve knee pain due to OA. It is used for patients who do not get adequate relief from simple painkillers or from exercise and physical therapy.

What should I expect from HYALGAN®?

HYALGAN® can provide long lasting relief of OA knee pain. Studies have shown that 5 injections given at weekly intervals can provide
long-lasting pain relief for up to 6 months. Most insurance companies allow these injections to be done every 6 months.

How does HYALGAN® help my OA knee pain?

HYALGAN® contains a natural substance called hyaluronan that relieves your pain by lubricating and cushioning your knee joint. Hyaluronate is a natural chemical found in the body and it is present in a particularly high amount in joint tissues and in the fluid that fills the joints (also called synovial fluid).

Can I keep taking my other drugs to manage the pain?

HYALGAN® does not interfere with any other medicines you may be taking for OA or other conditions.

Can I repeat my treatment with HYALGAN®?

Please consult with your doctor to find out whether you can benefit from repeated treatments. You can safely repeat your treatment for pain relief that lasts.
